All You Need to Know About Andrea Dovizioso & MotoGP™

It takes a certain kind of individual to race MotoGP™ bikes. At speeds reaching up to 220MPH and 65 degree turning angles, I’ll gladly pass, but that’s not the case for world-class rider Andrea Dovizioso. Winter testing in Malaysia and Australia are over and the spotlights are now about to go on again for all the riders of the MotoGP World Championship, which kicks-off this weekend with the opening round at Losail, in Qatar.

• Hobbies: Motocross, football, snowboarding
• Favorite bike: Panigale

Dovizioso had always grown up around racing; his passion for the two-wheel sport started at the age of four, and he will be the first to tell you that getting his first bike was one of the biggest emotions in his life. It was love at first sight!

Every Sunday he would watch his dad race motocross and if Dovi’ himself wasn’t riding, he always kept the timing for him. At six years old, he had his first mini-bike and one year later he started racing both on circuits and dirt tracks. At age 11, he became an official rider thanks to Antonio Gambarri, the owner of GRC, who Dovi honors even to this day.

In 2000, he raced the Challenge Aprilia, which was his first championship on a 125cc machine. In just a short year later, he raced in the Italian Championship finishing 4th and won the European Championship on a GP125. This major success is what opened the door to the MotoGP World Championship level.

After six seasons in the smaller machine classes, which, not to mention included the 2004 125 championship title, he entered the MotoGP ranks on a non-factory team, Honda of JiR Team Scot in 2008. Dovizioso debut resulted in beating Valentino Rossi to fourth in Qatar and becoming the highest placed non-factory rider.

Moto-COTAExperiences-2014-DoviziosoHe performed so well, he convinced the Repsol Honda team to move him into the factory outfit in 2009, taking his first MotoGP win at the British GP and claiming a pole position at the Motegi round. After 10 years with Honda, he joined the ‘satellite Monster’, Yamaha Tech3 team, which contested his 5th season in the MotoGP category and scoring six podiums. In 2013, Dovi made a big move to the Ducati Team, which he still calls home currently.

According to MotoGP.com this 2014 season Ducati will move into a new era, with Cal Crutchlow reunited with Dovizioso as a team-mate while former Aprilia guru Gigi Dall’Igna looks to revolutionize the team from a technical point of view. Big things are in store for the Ducati Team and you need to be there for all the action!
