About Austin

Austin, Texas is one happening place, making it a fantastic location for MotoGP Austin 2016. With so much to do for someone of any age and with any interest, it is one place you will enjoy visiting and exploring.

Austin is known for its culture and creativity and is a prime destination for lovers of music, comedy, filmmaking, and food. You can experience incredible live music in genres such as country, rock, folk, jazz, Celtic and bluegrass. When it comes to food, Austin has you covered. We’re talking barbecue joints, Tex-Mex eateries, and more than 1,500 food trucks around the city. Yes, you read that correctly! If you also love to laugh (who doesn’t?), Austin’s famous comedy clubs are right up your alley.

Spring and fall are the best times to visit, with temperatures hovering in the 70s and 80s. The weather is warm enough to wear shorts and swim outdoors, but thankfully, it’s not sweltering like it is during the summer.

If you are traveling by air, you’ll want to fly into Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The airport is of moderate size and easy to navigate. Don’t worry; you shouldn’t get lost. Also, for those of you traveling from outside the United States, make sure you have your passport. You’ll also be happy to know
Circuit of The Americas is only 15 minutes from the airport!

To get around the city, Austin has a Capitol Metro transit system with buses that run on a schedule. Renting a car is a very practical option, especially if you want to visit outlying areas of the city. Parking is usually not an issue with the exception of downtown on Friday and Saturday nights. The good news is, most parking is free! However, you need to be aware of toll roads throughout the city.

What to Do in Austin

As I mentioned earlier, there is so much to do in Austin. Here is a list of must-see places:

  • Zilker Park and Botanical Garden: This 347-acre park is home to several of Austin’s most popular attractions. Spend a few hours swimming, canoeing or digging up fossils. Take a stroll among the beautiful flowers in the Zilker Botanical Garden. Kick back and enjoy the open space!

  • Barton Springs Pool: Located in Zilker Park, Barton Springs Pool is one of Austin’s most famous landmarks and the most popular swimming hole in the city. This 900-foot-long pool averages 68 degrees throughout the year and offers a nice respite from the Texas heat.

  • Bats of the Congress Avenue Bridge: Austin is home to the largest urban bat population in North America. Every spring, the bats migrate from Mexico to the Congress Avenue Bridge. Stand on the bridge at dusk and watch over 1 million bats emerge into the sky!

  • 6th Street: Most visitors to Austin compare 6th street to Bourbon Street in New Orleans. With that being said, your trip to the “Live Music Capital of the World” wouldn’t be complete without strolling 6th street and visiting local bars, restaurants, shops and live-music joints.

  • Texas State Capitol: Since Austin is the capital of Texas, it only makes sense to visit and tour the Texas State Capitol which stands 302 feet high.
