1. Get artsy at the Baylor Street Art Wall
This is one of those Austin stops that uniquely captures the essence of Austin. Once slated to be a condo project that ended up not materializing, the concert foundation has become a canvas for local graffiti artists. It is constantly changing, just like the city. While there, be sure to climb to the top to get a great view of the city. Location: 11th & Baylor Street.
2. Nightlife done right
The most famous, well known street in Austin. 6th street (formerly known as Pecan Street),serves as Austin’s heart of entertainment and nightlife scene. The old historical buildings are now used as bars, music venues, cafes, art galleries, etc. If you want to experience Austin’s crazy nightlife, 6th street is the place to go.
3. “Come on in, the water’s fine!”
Created after the dome of an underground river collapsed, this natural swimming pool became one of Austin’s most beloved natural spots. Call some friends up and bring the whole family together with a picnic and a blanket. Enjoy the gorgeous waterfalls that have been naturally created and take a dip in the gorgeous Hamilton Pool Reserve. It really brings some “Blue Lagoon” feels to life.
4. Batman’s Little Friends
If bats don’t scare you, head to Congress Bridge at dusk to see more than 1.5 million Mexican Free-Tailed Bats take-off into the sky! The best vantage point for the bats is to just stand on the Congress Bridge, but there are also boats you can rent out and hills to picnic on. Afraid of bats? Learn more about them because they are actually awesome, and the population under the bridge eat 10,000–20,000 pounds of insects and pests each night!
5. Get romantic
Head over to Lady Bird Lake or Lake Austin and rent one of the many boats offered by local boat shops. Then make your way into the lake and watch the sunset with the special someone. Right as the sun begins to set, the sky is then illuminated by fireworks! Set the romantic scene for you and yours! You’ll definitely earn some points by crafting out a nice date out of it.
6. Take a hike
Mount Bonnell offers great views of the Austin landscape. If you’re up for the hike, grab your closest friends and make your way on up. Some of the trails can be strenuous, but the view is SO rewarding.
7. Barton Springs Pool & 8. Krause Springs
Barton Springs is truly an oasis to see for yourself! It is situated at the grounds of Zilker Park. It is a must-go-to place in the summer to cool off, with a 68 degree temperature all year round.
Krause Springs, is a favorite and a well-kept secret among Austin-tonians, until now. The family-owned property in Spicewood Springs is what dreams are made of. Natural springs fill a concrete swimming pool on the upper part of the property and the runoff flows via waterfall into the lagoon-like swimming hole down below.
9. Zipline over Lake Travis
Thrill seekers; come one, come all! This thrilling adventure over Lake Travis will get your blood pressure pumping. Even with the lake levels low, the views while ziplining are absolutely incredible, and it’s a one-of-a-kind experience. Be prepared to reach speeds of 60 mph.
10. Be Sporty
While at Lady Bird Lake, one doesn’t simply “hang out”. You can go out during the day or go for an evening cruise. You can also try kayaking, canoeing or rowing! Many take their kayaks and paddle boards to watch the bats fly. You can bring your own or if you are looking to rent try one of the many local shops.
11. Try Food Trucks
There is no escaping the “food truck” craze in Austin. You can find anything from sushi to cupcakes served fresh out of a truck. Plan a day and try to eat each meal of the day from a different trailer. Make sure you bring your “eating pants”.
12. Shop Local
The Austin Farmers’ Market is a local non-profit organization that encourages individuals to make healthy food choices and to support local farmers. Healthy, Organic, and Fresh!
13. Dance the Night Away
Head to the dusty, yet absolutely charming, Broken Spoke for a good ol’ country hoedown. The dancehall is a touch of authentic Texas, and there’s no better way to get back to basics than this beloved bar.
14. More shopping
If you still haven’t done all the shopping your little heart desires head on down to South Congress. This eclectic, hip, fashionable, and quirky place is surrounded by numerous restaurants, lively shops and music venues.
15. Listen to Live Music, of course!
You can’t come to the “Live Music Capital of The World” and not listen to live music; how unAustin of you. The Austin music scene is incomparable to any other, whatever genre of music you are feeling you will surely find it here in Austin any day.
