It’s been nearly a month since the last Formula 1™ race, and practice starts today for the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend! This dry spell gives the drivers some much-needed time to rest up, recover and regroup for the next race. The top two contenders for the world championship are currently Lewis Hamilton (#1) and Nico Rosberg (#2). After ending on a sour note in Hungary when #3 ranked driver Sebastian Vettel took the checkered flag, these two drivers will need to start and finish the remaining races of 2015 strong in order to maintain their standings and prevent Vettel from picking up speed.
So how did the top two ranked drivers in Formula 1™ racing spend their summer vacation? Let’s take a look!
Lewis Hamilton, #1
It’s clear from his posts this week that British driver Lewis Hamilton is getting amped for the second half of the year. Though he’s had some fun during his time off, he stated in an interview with BBC that he was frustrated with his sixth-place finish at the last race in Hungary and has channeled that disappointment into losing weight and training. Hamilton has had a solid season thus far, but currently holds only a 21-point lead over #2 ranked driver Nico Rosberg – these standings could be one race away from shifting. Hamilton will need to return to the track with a vengeance this weekend if he hopes to protect his lead.
Like we said, Hamilton got a little crazy on his summer break! We’re not sure that pancakes and bacon are part of any weight loss diet, but hey, he said it was only one day.
Nico Rosberg, #2
German driver Nico Rosberg currently holds the second slot and could be one race away from overtaking Hamilton for the top-ranking position. Like Hamilton, Rosberg also looks to come back from a disappointing outcome in Hungary; he suffered a collision late in the race and finished eighth. From the looks of the post above, he takes his commitment of being a Mercedes driver seriously – he’s been practicing behind the wheel of a Benz even off the track!
In spite of any anxiety he may be feeling about the approaching Belgian Grand Prix this weekend, Rosberg has got to be feeling even more nervous about the prospect of becoming a dad! His daughter is due next week and you can bet he’ll be breaking record speeds in a Mercedes to get to the hospital for the delivery. Check out the article here for more on Rosberg’s preparation for fatherhood.
