Moto Experiences MotoGPNo Luck in COTA™

Luck played a major role in Argentina for Dani Pedrosa’s first podium of 2016. At Austin, Pedrosa will be on his own accord to earn that podium. With two top ten finishes, Pedrosa holds third in the World Championship and is six points off Valentino Rossi. Some work will need to be done if Pedrosa hopes to close the gap between him and Rossi, the Spaniard has been noticeably unpleased with his bike and riding.

Dani Pedrosa said this in regards to how he’s preparing for COTA, “I’m looking forward to this round. There’s something special about the atmosphere of the American races, an besides, this is a track that I like very much. I didn’t make it here last year, but I made the podium the previous two seasons so the memories of the track are good. Our pace in the first two rounds hasn’t been as good as we would’ve liked, and we absolutely need to keep working to find some more speed; all in all, we’re third in the Championship, and we need to make a step forward if we want to fight for the podium at every race.”

Putting Tires to the Test

The new software and switch to Michelin tires was also supposed to require a more softly approach in terms of riding style, which is everything Marc Marquez isn’t. Marquez isn’t the only one having to adjust his strategy; Valentino Rossi began the 2016 season with minor hiccups in Argentina. Some riders seem to have similar problems with their rear tires and difficultly getting their footing with them.

Valentino on his tires after the Argentine race, “I was very happy to do the second part of the race because I was able to have a good battle with Marquez during the first part when I was strong and we started to overtake, but with the second bike I had big problems with the rear tire, I didn‘t have any feeling and couldn‘t stop under braking. The conditions were very difficult after the rain last night and we were back where we were on Friday when we were struggling quite a lot with our bike.”

QatarUndefeated Marquez

The two-part race in Argentina saw Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) back at his best, the Spaniard untouchable during the second half of the race. After a torturous of season, Marquez has been the only rider in the premier class to finish on the podium in both races. Thanks to third in Qatar and first in Argentina, the Repsol Honda man has a comfortable eight-point cushion at the top of the championship table. Both Argentina and Austin are circuits which suit Marquez’s style, the Spaniard winning at the Termas de Rio Hondo for the second time and aiming to take his fourth straight win in Austin.

Since joining the MotoGP™ class in 2013, Marquez has never lost on US soil. His record at COTA is even more impressive than that; not only has he won every edition of the race, but he has also started all three from pole position. All signs point to an ominous weekend at round three for Marquez, but his rivals are ready.
