Esteban Gutiérrez is one of Formula One™’s bright young drivers. Beginning his career with kart driving, he pushed his boundaries, proving his talent, to move into a test and reserve driver position. From there, Gutiérrez quickly moved into the role of F1 driver, securing respectable standings in competitive races.
In 2007, Gutiérrez finished second in the Formula BMW USA series and then competed in the Formula BMW Europe in 2008, getting the victory. Only 17-years-old at the time, this secured him as the youngest Mexican driver to win an International Championship. Gutiérrez switched to the GP3 Series in 2010, winning the championship title with five race wins. He then continued to GP2 for two seasons and in 2012, he had three wins and finished third in the standings.
He was given the chance to test for the BMW Sauber F1 Team in 2009 and Sauber accepted Gutiérrez onto the team in 2010. Gutiérrez, now 21-years-old, quickly grew into the team by listening and learning in the garage and from other drivers. By always being on location at the events, he has been able to take part in technical meetings and gain opportunities to grow as an F1 driver.
Gutiérrez’s family is very supportive of his racing career, although it did not begin that way. As the second youngest of six children, he and his brother shared a curiosity for kart driving even though his parents did not want them to drive. The boys were persistent were eventually able to start driving karts. Gutiérrez’s brother only continued to drive as a hobby while Gutiérrez’s racing career took off at full speed. At 13-years-old, he began competing and by 16, he began racing in Europe for the first time.
His family still supports him, as they are regularly out at the track. Gutiérrez knows how important the support of his family and his team has been in his success as an F1 driver and is grateful for their continued support in his journey.
