The Formula 1™ season is off to an unpredictable start. Underdogs are in first place and predicted winners are no where to be seen. As per usual, the world's most thrilling event gets even more thrilling. Without a doubt, Formula 1™ racing is the most exciting and prestigious motor racing series, and it is also the most popular annual sporting series worldwide!
For the season kick-off on March 26th, racers from all of the world went down under for the Rolex Australian Grand Prix. Unexpected winner, Sebastian Vettel ended the 5 year drought for Ferrari with his 1:24:11.762 race time. This was the first time Vettel had won a race since the Singapore Grand Prix in 2015. He managed to beat out race favorite, Lewis Hamilton from the United Kingdom by just under 10 seconds. Hamilton started off the race strong from pole position, however encountered a lot of pressure from the German winner from the start and found himself cause behind Max Verstappen, costing him the race. It had been 10 years since Ferrari took home the top title in Australia, "It's been a long time coming and it shows we're going to have a race on our hands," a comment made by Hamilton, post race.
On April 9th it was time to gear up in Shanghai for the Heineken Chinese Grand Prix race where Lewis Hamilton was able to redeem himself and clinch a race win for Mercedes. For the first time ever, Mercedes was vulnerable after their defeat in Melbourne and they desperately wanted this win. Hamilton took away the fastest lap and lead every lap throughout the race. He was at his most serene and clinical best which was necessary for the Silver Arrows. Sebastian Vettel trailed behind just over 6 seconds with a race time of 1:37:36.158. Max Verstappen started in 16th, made it up to 7th place after the first lap and he drove a spectacular race to end up in 3rd. Hamilton stated, "I think it's going to be one of the cloest ones, if not the closest I've personally ever experience - and I'm looking forward to this fight."
Two weeks ago racers prepared for the most recent race, the VTB Russian Grand Prix. Valtteri Bottas from Finland clinched his first ever Formula 1™ race win with a race time of 1:28:8.743, just .627 seconds ahead of Sebastian Vettel. The Mercedes driver was not expected to win after a Ferrari defeat during the practice race. Bottas is now within 10 points of Hamilton causing the British driver to rethink his strategy. "It is not important to think about the championship because I need to understand where the speed was, where I went wrong with the set-up and then come back fighting for the next race."
Everyone is now in Barcelona getting ready for the Spanish Grand Prix and racers and spectators alike couldn’t be more unsure of what to expect. With the surprises from the first three races, it will be interesting to see who can show out on top. Many predictions have been placed and Lewis Hamilton seems to be the favorite thus far.
