Where did the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship begin? Go back to the year 1999 when a Georgia-based business man created a partnership that would spark a series of races to ignite passion amongst many fans of the sport.
Starting in pharmaceuticals, Donald Panoz made a prominent impact as an entrepreneur at a young age. While studying business at Duquesne University, Panoz operated two drug stores stemming his passion for pharmaceuticals. he would later form a few of his own companies Milan Pharmaceuticals and Elan Corporation, which both proved very profitable for him and his family.
His switch later in life to motorsport ventures is due to his son Dan who opened Panoz Auto Development with funding from his dad in 1989. Skeptical of the new venture at first, Panoz soon would fall in love with sport and expand their company in 1997 to Panoz Motorsports, which lead to the birth of the American Le Mans Series. This series which started in 1999 aimed to align Panoz’s passion to bring European-style endurance sports car racing to the United States.
