Nico Rosberg took a strong grip on this year’s Formula One™ world championship with a win at Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix, to stretch his lead over Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton to 33 points as the drivers head to Austin for the FORMULA 1 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX™.
In a strange weekend for reigning world champion Hamilton, which saw him become embroiled in media controversy – he spent Thursday’s press conference on Snapchat, before walking out of his press conference on Saturday refusing to answer questions – the Briton fluffed his lines at the start yesterday and despite climbing back to third place in the finish, the title race is now out of his hands.
Nico Rosberg, who began the race from pole position, never really looked like being threatened throughout the course of the race. In what was his ninth win of the season, the German finished 4.9 seconds ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. With four races to go, the title is his to lose.
Long Way Still to Go
With less than two weeks to go until F1™ USGP, Mercedes chief Toto Wolff insists this year’s title is far from a foregone conclusion. ““There are four weekends to go. Lewis will regroup. Nico won seven in a row and Lewis is very strong.
“He needs the enemy. Sometimes more than one. That is how he functions and I think it will go to the end. Thirty-three points is a lot, but you can see how quick it goes.”
Though Rosberg needs just three second places and one third from the remaining races to become champion for the first time, expect Hamilton to fight until the very end. He has endured some pretty hard luck of late; with three engine failures, in China, Russia and Malaysia. For the fifth time this season Hamilton made a wretched getaway, immediately dropping from his second place on the grid to eighth. That followed other awful starts in Australia, Bahrain, Canada and Italy. Rosberg has had no such trouble.
