What to Know Before You Go to the 2016 Pirelli World Challenge at COTA™

As the beginning of the 2016 Pirelli World Challenge season draws near, there’s no question that the season opener at Circuit of The Americas™ in Austin could set the tone for the entire year.  If you’ve got your Circuit of The Americas Experiences ticket package already booked, read on for handy facts and information that you should know before heading to the races!

Weekend Schedule

One of the best qualities of the Pirelli World Challenge (PWC) is the fact that each race is a sprint lasting only 50 minutes in length.  Need to hit the restroom or grab a bite to eat?  Breaks between racing action are frequent, giving you ample opportunities to take care of your business.  The event kicks off in the middle of the week with testing and practice rounds before moving into qualifying races on Friday.  Find the detailed weekend schedule here!

PWCAs far as parking goes, Lot A is the recommended lot during the weekend of the PWC – it’s located directly in front of the Main Grandstand entrance for maximum convenience.  Multi-day parking is available in advance, and single day parking is listed as cash only.  Dry camping or bringing an RV?  COTA™ can accommodate that, too.  An RV park is located trackside and dry camping spaces are available in Lot H.

Visit this Circuit of The Americas page for more information on parking and camping.

Prohibited Items at Circuit of The Americas™

Restrictions at COTA are pretty standard and are most likely consistent with the restrictions seen at other events you’ve attended at large venues.  Nonetheless, it’s always best to educate yourself on what not to bring!  It should be noted that Circuit of The Americas has “no provisions for returning banned items to [guests] when such items are left at race entrances.”  So leave the video camera at home or in your car if you don’t want to lose it!  Also, be prepared to have your bag or purse screened at the entrance for prohibited items.

The Weather

The period of March to May has been listed as the best time of year to visit Austin by U.S. News!  High temperatures are historically in the low 70s, and the humidity is relatively mild.  The air is typically coolest towards the beginning of the month and when you look up at any given time during the month, you’re most likely to see a partly cloudy sky.  In short, your chances of perfect weather during the Pirelli World Challenge are excellent!

Live Music6th Street is where it’s at in downtown Austin.  If you’re looking for a respectable but laid-back place to let your hair down, stop by the dual-level Voodoo Room after dark!  Though it’s only been open for a couple of years and is relatively new to the Austin scene, its warm décor and cool atmosphere evoke a haunted mansion in New Orleans and have made it an extremely popular watering hole.

Much like its neighbor, Houston, Austin is known for its diverse scene of live music venues downtown.  Blues, country, folk music, rock and roll, jazz, hip hop – you name it and you’ll find it.  If you’re looking for a space downtown that combines the nightclub atmosphere with multi-genre live music, look no further than Parish!  Parish has played hosts to prominent artists such as Pete Townshend and Slash in the past and already has a couple of great acts lined up for the weekend of.

If you’re looking for the quintessential live music experience, you’re in luck – the sixth location of legendary blues venue Antone’s just opened on New Year’s Eve!  The late owner of Antone’s, Clifford Antone, is widely regarded as the man responsible for launching the career of blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan and several other prominent musicians.  This historic club’s new location on East 5th Street in downtown Austin is in close proximity to all the excitement of the city.  Check out their lineup for PWC weekend on their website!
