With the F1® USGP quickly approaching, we're excited to announce that McLaren's Stoffel Vandoorne will officially be making an appearance in the Champions Club and will be speaking and available for autographs and photos!
So why is Vandoorne such a big deal? Let's get to know one of Belgium's best drivers!
Born in Kortrijk, Belgium in 1992, Vandoorne got into his first kart at the age of six. He started officially racing early on in his childhood, earning his first victories in the national karting series and was already the Belgian KF2 Champion by 16.
He continued racing all throughout his youth and teenage years, finding success in Formula Renault and the GP2 Series. He won the Formula Renault series in his first attempt in 2010, and his stock continued to rise and he ascended the racing ranks.
But it was in 2013 when he joined Formula 1 that his star started to shine.
In 2013, Vandoorne became a part of McLaren's Young Driver Program and started to gain more experience under his belt. He became the vice-champion with four wins in the 3.5 series that year. In 2014, he was promoted to be the third driver for McLaren F1 while still having driving duties for ART Grand Prix in the GP2 Series.
Everything changed in 2016 when it was officially announced that Vandoorne would replace McLaren's regular driver, Fernando Alonso, in the Bahrain Grand Prix after Alonso was not medically cleared to drive. Vandoorne finished 10th in the race, becoming the first driver since Sebastian Vettel in 2007 to score points in their debut.
While acting as a reserve, Vandoorne also spent a season in Japan's Super Formula, finishing fourth overall after two wins.
Vandoorne became partners with Alonso in 2017 when it was announced that Jenson Button would not be racing that season. He scored 13 points in his rookie season alongside Alonso's 17 points.
Most recently, Vandoorne was informed that he was retained for the entirety of the 2018 season.
